Third Consecutive Second Place Finish for PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports
Team Driver Luis Díaz secures LMPC class fastest lap.
August 22, 2010, Elkhart Lake, WI
PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports captured their third straight second place finish, and their fourth straight podium today at the American Le Mans Series powered by eStar at Road America. Additionally, with a 2:01.331 laptime on lap 47, team driver Luis Díaz, of Mexico City, MX, took the LMPC class fastest lap, fifth overall. Starting on pole, co-driver Ricardo González, of Monterrey, MX, took his first green flag at the world revered Road America circuit and quickly acclimated himself to the track’s viciously quick straightaways and sweepers. González put in an impressive drive, keeping the #52 IDN Business Consulting/ Corsa Car Care/ Cooper Gay Oreca FLM09 up front and led the LMPC class early in the race. Pitting from second on lap 23, González and Díaz swapped places while the #52 experienced an eye-opening small fire out of the left side muffler. With the situation under control and with no crucial damage, Díaz was released from the pit box and rejoined the race in fourth.
Díaz made his way back to the front of the LMPC field setting fastest lap in the process. He would eventually challenge for the class victory once again before bringing the #52 to the checkered flag in second place.
In addition to Díaz securing the race’s fastest lap, González secured the second fastest LMPC lap for PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports as well.
“It was a good day because once again we showed everybody the potential that we have,” González said. “Luis turned the fastest lap of the race and I had the second fastest, so that just goes to show the hard work and effort that has gone into this project. It is always disappointing to lose the race based on strategy and not on speed, but that’s racing so we’ll just have to live with it. I was taking it pretty easy during my stint. We were fast and I knew that I had to stay out of trouble and stay in front for Luis. Everything was looking great for us, but all the yellows really hurt us and we couldn’t capitalize on our speed. The good thing is we know we have the best car out there and we’ll be strong wherever we go.”
Díaz laments the lost opportunity to win today, but is optimistic of the team’s chances at Mosport.
“Two podiums in a row is a good result, but the truth is that we are disappointed not to get the win today,” Díaz said. "We have been the fastest car by far all weekend and also during the race, and we did everything right but sometimes luck doesn’t go your way. The #99 car was very lucky with the yellows and their strategy worked out better. At the end, I saw them come out of the pits right in front of me and I tried to chase them down. Our tires were pretty worn by then and they had brand new ones so we couldn’t catch up. We also were having some engine alarms come up on the dash so we decided to just back off for the last few laps and secure second place. So we leave here even hungrier for a win, now we’ll just have to go to Mosport and get it there.”
Bobby Oergel, PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Team Principal, has his eyes set on the next round at Mosport International Raceway.
“We led practice sessions, got the pole, got the fastest lap, and scored another podium,” Oergel said. “We knew that we had a fast car and the whole team performed flawlessly, but our first win eluded us once again today. However, both Luis and Ricardo are working really well with the team and our communication and feedback is the best it’s ever been. So with Road America in our mirrors, we’re focusing on Mosport and on getting our first win.”
